I have a 1940 Pontiac with a 350 Cu In Chevy motor and a Griffin Radiator. In the hot summer months in the south with the air conditioner running I'll see temperatures of 220-230 degrees F. I'm using a flex fan on the water pump and have a "pusher" electric fan in front of the radiator. The car never "pukes" even though it seems to be quite hot. I've been told, "if it doesn't puke, don't worry about it". I've also been told that since my sending unit is in the head, the temperature of the coolant is actually 20 degrees less the the Gage is reading. I'm running a 190 thermostat and in the cooler months, it never gets beyond this on the gage.
Any comments? Are the statements "Truth or hot rod fiction?"

Jim,

I've seen applications where moving the sending unit from the cyliner head to the intake will cause the gauge to reader a lower temperature. However, if yours reads at the thermostat rating in the winter it would have to be correct in the summer.

If the system isn't full of water it won't puke when it gets hot....the air in the system will compress to compensate. And, a car usually only pukes water once....and if you don't add water back the air in the system will compress the next time it overheats.

So, I think your car is indead running too hot and you need to do something about it.

A Cruise Cooler water pump and thermostat should help. Also, a large puller electric fan will work better than the combination you have.
